This is just a drive-by posting.  My plans for the week went haywire, so I wasn’t around to share this yesterday:

The lovely Delilah Devlin allowed me to share another guest post at her blog yesterday, and there is a giveaway involved.  To check it out, go see Delilah’s blog.

Now I’m off to try to catch up on the things I missed the past few days while dealing with parental stuff.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

A long time ago, in almost another life, I used to write book reviews for an online site.  I discovered so many fantastic authors that way, and many of them I still love.  One of those authors I discovered was Jennifer Lyon, with the first book in her ‘Wing Slayer Hunter’ series, Blood Magic.  Witches in hiding, the sexy, dangerous men hunting them, what’s not to like?

When I worked for seven years at Borders, I always had romance readers looking for something new, and if they were looking for paranormal romance, it’s a safe bet that I handed them that book or, if they were some of my regular readers, the latest in the series since I would have already hooked them at the beginning.  Now I am absolutely thrilled to get to share a little bit of the latest book in the series with you.  And make sure you read all the way through to the end, because there is so much awesomeness here, including an excerpt and a giveaway!

Caged Magic Blurb

Risa Faden is a witch whose ultra-powerful shield magic is slowly breaking her mind. But when her beloved goddaughter is snatched by a demon, she’ll risk anything to rescue the baby—including lying to the handsome, intriguing stranger who has the power to help her keep her sanity, save the child…and steal her heart.

Linc Dillinger is a Wing Slayer Hunter whose sexy, rich, bad-boy charm hides a treacherous betrayal that left him emotionally scarred. As a result he risks his life to protect innocents, but is incapable of love—until he meets a beautiful witch who can save his cursed soul. Risa’s fierce courage and loyalty reaches past his barriers and he begins to believe she has the magic to free his caged heart.

But Risa’s lie explodes into dark danger that forces Linc into a hellish high-stakes gamble: He must either win the witch he loves and her godchild…or endure a loss that will destroy them all.

Now, how about a little bit of story for all of you?

The ache he’d just satisfied tingled, heat spreading at the thought of him inside her. He’d been patient, seducing her, showing her she could trust them. Time for her to do her part. They both needed to seal the bond. But she’d never forget this moment with him.

Even when he hated her later for lying.

Anxiety edged in, but Risa held on to his gaze and slid her hand over his stomach. Jeez, the ridges of his muscles entranced her. The man felt as cut as he looked.

Focus. She knew how to do this. Reaching his belt, she—

He caught her hand. “Wait.”

“Why?”

“You feel the bird, right?”

She nodded. The sensation of the creature winging gently around her magic almost protectively resembled being hugged from the inside.

“He’s helping you harness the magic. Let’s see if we can find your girl, now. As long as you feel him, he’ll keep you safe.”

Startled, she stared up into his eyes filled with wings. This man constantly surprised her. “Don’t you want to break your curse?”

“Fuck yes. Even more than that, I want you, want to feel you, to take our pleasure together.”

“Then…” She tried to understand. Kendall was his ace card, the one he could play to make sure she gave him that. “Why wait?”

“Because more than all that, I want you to be free to choose, Risa. Right now, you’ll choose to do this for Kendall. And God, baby, I respect the hell out of that. But it’s not what I want.”

Confusion spiraled. “What do you want?”

His gaze pierced hers. “For you to do this because you want to, not because you have to.”

Hot tears threatened, and her chest ached. Why? Dear God, why did Linc, this man who’d endured being sold by his mother, caged and used in ways that she couldn’t fathom, why did he have to be so kind to her?

I hope if you haven’t read any of the books in this series, you’ll want to give them a try now.  Not only am I really ready for Linc’s story, I feel the need to go back and start from the beginning of the series now.  I haven’t read some of these books in much too long.

Catch-up!

I know it’s been a couple weeks since my last post, but I wanted to make sure the giveaway stayed front and center until it was over.  Now that it is, I can chat some more.  First, though, I want to congratulate Lisa V, who won the ARC giveaway.  I hope you enjoy your box of books!

Since I blogged last, I sent Medusa #2 off to my agent again and I’m back to work on Medusa #3.  They really do have names, but what if they change?  Oh, heck, if they change, I’d certainly let you all know.  My working titles are Protecting Medusa (#2) and Freeing Medusa (#3).  And now that I’m back into #3, I remember why I love this hero so much.  And this Medusa, too.  I am not too far away from finishing the first draft, then I can polish that up and send it off, too, then get back into my shifter manuscript (which doesn’t even have a working title, sorry).  I might actually get back on track with my writing goals for the year.  Holy cow!  I didn’t think that was going to happen, with all the time I spent fighting with Medusa #2.

My other big upcoming writing thing is prepping for the RWA conference in NYC next month.  I didn’t get registered in time to take part in the literacy signing, which makes me sad, but I am still looking forward to the conference.  I just need to narrow down my huge wish list of workshops.  Ha!

And before I sign off for the night, I have to share this.  In the third (and final!) Medusa, there might be a little of this:

One of these days I’ll get to visit it myself.  I bet it’s even more amazing than all of the pictures I’ve studied.

I just posted a little story snippet over on my Facebook page, from Medusa #3, for those of you who are interested in seeing how Katharine finds her hero, even though she doesn’t know it at the time.  If you do pop over to check it out, I hope you let me know what you think.

Here’s to lots of reading time this week!

It’s warm and humid outside here today, the perfect day to stay inside and work on my manuscript.  Which is why I’m here instead.  (In case you weren’t aware, writers are masters of procrastination!)  I’ve been thinking about this for a little while, and, since it’s been some time since I last did a giveaway, we’re overdue.

But I pondered for a few weeks on how to do this one and came up with something a little different than our previous giveaways, which took place here or on my Facebook page exclusively.  This one is going to tie the two together a little bit.

First, though, the goodies in the giveaway box…  In another life, I used to do book reviews for a long time, and I still sometimes get advanced reader copies of books, or I pick them up at booksignings and conferences, and mostly they pile up here.  But I’m going to share some for this giveaway, okay?

In this box, there are ARCs of:  Gayle Callen’s Surrender to the Earl; Johanna Lindsey’s Stormy Persuasion; Opal Carew’s His to Claim; Maggie Robinson’s Lord Gray’s List; Anne Marsh’s Burning Up; Mary Alice Monroe’s The Summer’s End; Jessica Sims’s Wanted: Wild Thing; Kate Noble’s The Game and the Governess; Emma Cane’s True Love at Silver Creek Ranch; Colette Auclair’s Branded; Lily Everett’s Shoreline Drive; Eloisa James’s Three Weeks with Lady X; Jenna Black’s Rogue Descendant; Larissa Ione’s Chained by Night; the anthology The Lady Most Willing… with stories by Julia Quinn,  Eloisa James, and Connie Brockway; and Katie Lane’s Hunk for the Holidays.  There might be a couple other little things in the box as well.

Now, to be eligible for the giveaway:  since I’ll be mailing, you must be a U.S. resident over 18; and you must visit my Facebook page to like the page (if you haven’t already) and tell me there that you saw this blog post.  That’s it.  Easy, right?

The deadline for entering is going to be May 31, 2015, 11:59 p.m. EST, and then I’ll use RandomResult.com to draw the winner during the first week of June.

Hope to see you there (and here!).  Now, it’s back to polishing Medusa #2.  And I’ll leave you my first Medusa to look at in the meantime…

My shiny new cover art! isn't it pretty?

My shiny new cover art! isn’t it pretty?

Today’s the Day!

Wooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooo!

Yes, I am excited.  Just a tad.  Okay, more than a tad.

Today is the day Hunting Medusa comes out in paperback!  Maybe it’s silly that I’m just as excited as I was when the ebook was released last January, but I don’t care.  There were days over the last decade when I thought I would never see this day, so I’m going to enjoy it.

And while I’m enjoying it, I have goodies to share with readers!  I’m hosting a Paperback Release Day party over on my Facebook page for most of the day.  I have all kinds of things to give away:  swag, books, gift cards, and a nice big box full of stuff at the end of it all.  Some of the giveaways require a little work, but it’s fun work.  I’ve got story snippets to share.  I’ve also got some cabana boys lined up to come serve drinks and desserts throughout the party, and if you have one you like, bring him along, too, but please come on over!

My shiny new cover art! isn't it pretty?

My shiny new cover art! isn’t it pretty?

Today is the day I finally get to pet my very pretty book.  I hope you come celebrate with me!

I am in countdown mode right now:  only four more days until Hunting Medusa is out in trade paperback.  This is as exciting as pub day last January, if only because it means I’m going to get to hold my book in my own hands at last!  Also, I know I have some friends and readers who aren’t so wild about e-books, so they’ve been waiting impatiently for the paperback so they can read the story, too, and I’m excited for them to get to read it finally.  If you have been waiting for the paperback, too, it is up for pre-ordering at Samhain, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.  I’m looking forward to getting to pet my pretty cover when it’s attached to the rest of the book at last!

Also, I have a guest blog up this morning with the generous Jessie Clever here.  It’s been so much fun doing these guest posts, and answering some of these questions was challenging.  I hope you’ll all check it out.

Now I’m heading back to the fresh rewrites on my second Medusa.  And counting down, not just to paperback release day, but the Facebook party I’ll be hosting on paperback release day.  I’ve got goodies to give away during the course of the day, including, books, gift certificates, and a big box full of things at the end of the party.  I hope you’ll come join me.

Just a quick note today to let you know I have a guest blog post live today at Delilah Devlin’s place!  I hope you check it out.  Oh, and there’s a giveaway.

Elizabeth Andrews: Goals and Plans (Contest).

Today is a big day for a fellow Samhain author Allison Merritt: cover reveal day for her next release!  And a yummy cover it is, too.

Eban cover

How pretty is he?  It made me want to know more about him, and, luckily, I got all the info to share with everyone else, too.  The only bad news? We have a few more months to wait to get our hands on this sexy doctor.  In the meantime, here are all the details to whet your appetites.

Eban (The Heckmasters, Book 2)
Author: Allison Merritt
ISBN13: 978-1-61922-634-0
Length: 70k
Release date: April 7, 2015

If love can’t save them, there will be hell to pay.
Grateful for his mother’s human blood that cools the dark fire of his demon father, Eban Heckmaster has set up a medical practice in New Mexico territory. But there’s no hope of living a normal life until he rids himself of a seductive demon that’s been pursuing him.

Vanquishing it won’t be as simple as sharpening his demon-hunting sword. The clever creature is hiding inside his best friend’s head, and she has no idea of the havoc she’s been wreaking, especially with his body.

Beryl suspects Eban knows why she’s been waking up with no memory of where she’s been or what she’s done, but he’s not talking. But when she inevitably learns what he’s hiding—or rather, what’s hiding inside her—she wonders if her love for him is real, or an illusion created by the demon’s lust.

Eban is losing the battle to hold his rising desire in check. There may be only one way to extricate Beryl from the beast entangling her mind. Call upon his demon blood…and offer it as a sacrifice.

Warning: Contains a half-human, half-demon doctor who can heal anyone except himself, and a woman who’d blush if she could remember the sensuous torture she’s been inflicting on him. Could make you wonder if you should start listening to the voices in your head…

About the Author:

A love of reading inspired Allison Merritt to pursue her dream of becoming an author who writes historical, paranormal and fantasy romances, often combining the sub-genres. She lives in a small town in the Ozark Mountains with her husband and dogs. When she’s not writing or reading, she hikes in national parks and conservation areas.

Allison graduated from College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri with a B.A. in mass communications that’s gathering dust after it was determined that she’s better at writing fluff than hard news.

Welcome to Crazy Season

holiday shopping( Photo credit: Diario Critico Venezuela / Foter / CC BY )

This is very similar to the way things will look in my world for the next month since my day-job is in retail.  My coworkers and I will grin and bear it when we really want to run, screaming, from the building, and in my ‘down time’, I will keep working on these rewrites from hell, as well as prepping for the January 6 paperback release of Hunting Medusa.  I have started a nice little collection of goodies for the release day party over on my Facebook page.

Today, as a procrastination device to put off the desire to gouge out my eyeballs from staring at these wretched rewrites, I posted a little snippet of Andrea and Kallan’s story there, too, in case you want to take a peek.  I’ve also started making a list of places I’ll be guest-blogging in the next month or so, leading up to the paperback release.

And hey, why not a different story snippet here, too?  Just in case you need enticing when release day rolls around…

———-

She met his gaze, her own troubled. “I don’t suppose you’d just leave. Let me alone.”

Something in his chest tightened, and he shook his head. “I’m afraid not. Besides, I’ve already found you. That means others can find you as well.” Somehow, he hadn’t thought of that before, and it unsettled him. Any of his dozens of cousins could be on their way to Andrea’s mountain now, following the same vague clues he had, intent on killing her. And none of them knew they couldn’t take the amulet after they did. Somehow, that bothered him less than the idea of one of them killing her.

“You have to figure something out soon then. You only have a day or so.”

Then her curse would kick in, and she could kill him instead of the other way around. And with far less difficulty.

Kallan sighed, tipping his head back to look up at the dark green canopy for a moment. “I’ll figure something out,” he said at last. “Let’s walk some more.”

She looked away, her mouth turned down, as they began to walk.

He linked their fingers again, ignoring her slight start at the touch, and led her deeper into the forest.

———-

Now I want to go admire my pretty cover again.

HuntingMedusa72webThat would be a good way to procrastinate, too, right?

How crazy are things going to be in your world for the next month?

Summer Wind-Down

Considering just how much I normally despise summer, this year, it’s been a fairly decent season here.  I am so not a fan of the hot and sticky that is the norm in our area that summer is generally my least-favorite season.  I prefer spring or fall, when it’s cooler, either when the garden is just coming to life, pretty flowers blooming, or the changing colors of the leaves on the trees that normally signals cooler days and nights.

writers retreat 13 061 This year, I might actually miss some of these nice summer days when they’re gone.  Or at least wish there were a few more to be had so I could spend a little time outside enjoying them.  I wouldn’t mind a few more days at the beach to enjoy days like we’re having here today.

I have been keeping my head down and myself inside, however, on these lovely summer days, so I can slog through more rewriting of Medusa #2.  This has been a particularly hectic week at work and today is my only day off for the week (at least the overtime on my next paycheck will make the super-long week worthwhile), so all of the week’s chores are crammed into this one day, too.  I spent half my morning at the garage having the annual inspection done on my car, then home to laundry and other necessary household tasks.  But I’m not making supper–Subway, here we come!–and then the evening will be devoted to more time on these rewrites.  I decided the other day that once I’ve made this pass through, I’m going to send the whole thing off to my agent, because I’m having a hard time now telling whether I’ve actually made improvements to it, or if it sucks more than our vacuum.

So, because I’m not sure it isn’t the worst bunch of crap ever put on paper, I am pulling a little snippet from Hunting Medusa to share with you.  Because I am still in love with Andi and Kallan.

————

He gave her a knowing smile, but kept his mouth shut.

And she found herself smiling back.

Stupid.

But her smile didn’t fade as quickly this time.

As she walked, more slowly now, she let her mind drift to what it would be like to actually have a real relationship again. If she could ignore the fact he’d come to kill her, there were other aspects of the past few days she could get used to. Like having someone to talk to who didn’t think she was a complete nutcase. Like having someone who not only believed in the myths that shaped her life, but had also been influenced by them. Like the smoking-hot sex.

She fanned herself a little.

“You all right?”

Heat climbed her throat. “Still cooling down from that last segment,” she called back over her shoulder. “Jackass,” she added under her breath.

She resolved to think of nothing but getting to safety for now. Getting distracted by wishing for things she knew she could never have wouldn’t keep her safe from Kallan’s cousin.

Andi froze in mid-stride, her heart thundering in her chest suddenly, and it wasn’t from exertion this time. Her gaze stuck on the dark, shiny creature lying across their path, and her pulse pounded in her ears.

His hands landed on her shoulders. “What?”

“S-snake,” she whispered.

“Are you kidding?” He moved to stand beside her, and looked into her face. “You’re serious,” he said after a couple seconds, a grin tugging at his mouth. He glanced to the trail ahead and started to laugh. “It’s only a garter snake.”

Andi ground her teeth together, heat climbing her neck to her face, but not in a good way now. Just because that damned Athena had cursed her to sprout snakes on her head every month didn’t mean she liked them.

He laughed until she wanted to hit him. Or better yet, turn him to stone. Too bad she wasn’t PMSing anymore.

Not looking at Kallan, she folded her arms and waited for the snake to finish slithering across the path.

Still chuckling, he gestured to the trail ahead. “All clear.”

She hated him. Sticking her chin in the air, she marched past him, barely resisting the urge to smack him as she went. She consoled herself with that mental image for a few minutes, of punching him square in the nose. Or mouth. Maybe knocking the smug grin off his face. Drawing blood would be good. She curled her fingers into fists at her sides as she went, only vaguely aware of him close on her heels.

After a while, though, she grew more aware of his nearness, as the forest darkened around them. His heat was within reach, if she stopped and stretched out her arm. Not that she would. Especially not now.

————

And now I’m off to Subway for an easy supper, then I’ll bury myself in rewrites again.  In the meantime, I’d love if you’d pop over to my Facebook page and give it a like.  I’m hoping we hit 200 likes before too long and then I think I might need to do a giveaway.
